Crazy Hair Day: Rag Rug

I gave this hairdo to Belle a couple evenings ago just for the fun of it.  She didn't actually wear it out anywhere--we were just being goofy.  It's just in time for Dr. Suess' birthday, though, since a lot of schools have a crazy hair day, so I'm posting it anyway.  Belle's school is doing a literary character dress-up day instead of crazy hair day.

This hairstyle is a half dutch cornrow spiraling all around the head.  Start at the crown with a small section, begin braiding around.  Since I was just playing, I used my fingers to draw up new sections of hair, but you could make it look a little neater if you use a comb.  There is nothing you can do about the ends of the hair sticking out.  Once the hair you began braiding with runs out of length, you'll have a new piece of hair running out with every plait til the end.  Braid down the end when you run out of hair on the scalp to add in.  Wrap it around, tuck in the ends, and bobby pin it in place.  Or just leave it hanging for more craziness.

I call this the rag rug because it reminds me of those braided oval or circular rugs.

Crazy Hair Day: The Flowerpot

For this style I was inspired by the little face in the bottom right corner on the Dr. Suess webpage.  Belle's school has crazy hair day during ribbon week (no longer just RED ribbon, but all sorts of colors), but I wanted to do a Dr. Suess hairstyle for all of you that have crazy hair day in March for Dr. Suess' birthday.  (Check the side bar for more Dr. Suess/crazy hair ideas.)
To start, make a ponytail with the hair at the top of the head.  I saved out a section near the bangs to sweep off to the side so it will still be pretty even though it is crazy.  This is optional depending on whether you have bangs or cowlicks or whatever.  I used colored hairbands thinking they would be hidden, but since they do show a bit, you could use a color to match the hair if you prefer.
Center and wrap a pipe cleaner around the base of the hairband and twist the ends together a couple times at the bottom.
Add another pipe cleaner around the first one, this time not centered, but with one end long.  Twist it to hold it in place.
Fold it upward.
Pull the hair from the pony upward so it goes around all sides of the pipe cleaners.  Add an elastic a few inches higher than the first around the hair and pipe cleaners.
Drop the hair, and arrange it so that it evenly distributed around the ponytail.  Add an elastic to the bottom, careful not to pull the "flowerpot" out of shape.  It may be helpful to twist the elastic to form two loops before inserting it over the pipe cleaners.
Fold the two short ends of the pipe cleaner over to look like leaves.  Using tissue paper, cut a flower shape like this one.  Fold the paper in half then half again and cut the edges to be round. (Fold in half again to get the petals to be symmetrical.)
Scrunch up the center of the flower and tape it onto the long pipe cleaner.  Bend the pipe cleaner to look wiggly.
Make a part at the back of the head, and make two pigtails just above the ears.  Include the hair from the flowerpot.
The pigtails will have two lengths of hair, the shorter section from the flowerpot.  Divide the sections.  Using only the longer hair, wrap it around the hairband and then into a knot.
Use a clear elastic to hold the knot in place.
Add a bow, if you like.
Belle won the "craziest hair" competition in her classroom.  Her teacher couldn't believe she had a flower growing out of her head!

April Fool's (a bit late)

I've been saving this picture to post on April 1st for a long time, but now I've missed it!  Oh well.  This is a twisty braid with a side bun.  Just add static from a plastic twisty playground slide!

Crazy Hair Day

Red Ribbon Week (Say No to Drugs!) was last week, and the school had a crazy hair day.  This was our invention.

I braided her bangs, did a zigzag part, put plastic drinking cups on either side, brushed the hair over the cups, and put in hairbands.  I wrapped a pipe cleaner or two around the hairband and braided them in.  One braid I formed into a zigzag, and the other a corkscrew.  On one end, I spread the tail out and sprayed it with spray gel.  The other I added a poof.  I wrapped the bang braid around one cup and clipped it in place.  Very weird.

Happy April Fool's Day

Today Belle wanted this ridiculous elephant hairstyle I gave her last August when we were entering the contest at Babes in Hairland to try and win tickets to the circus.  I just couldn't do it!
After a third failed attempt at making this Rapunzel style from the new Disney movie Tangled (I will get this right and post it!), I gave up and tried something completely different.  Click here for the Rapunzel tutorial.
This is basically a four strand flat plait (instructions coming in the future) turned up and tucked back down through.  The ribbon is tied to the top crossover section of the plait before it is turned.  I tried keeping it all in place with mini clips and bobby pins, but they were falling out and pulling "ouchy" places before she even left for school.  She also complained she didn't like the tail sticking out the bottom and that it was itchy.  So another error that needs more trials.

Dr. Suess' Birthday ideas (March 2)

Tomorrow is Dr. Suess' birthday.  To celebrate, Belle will be sporting a Suess style bow made of hair.  Learn how at Girly Do's By Jenn.  She'll have a ponytail with one bow rather than piggies like this.

Another idea you might like is to do the french pony with alternating red and white hairbands.
If you want to get really wild, you can do a Whoville hairstyle by putting a plastic cup on top of her head, brushing all the hair up over it for a ponytail, then braiding or curling the ends.  Add a pipe cleaner into the braid to shape it and make it stick out.

Or Thing 1 and Thing 2, for medium short hair, turn head upside down, add a ton of hairspray, and blow dry the hair towards the floor.  Add some blue hair color...  Really this is not my sort of thing, but some schools do a crazy hair day for Dr. Suess' birthday.  This would be crazy.

For shorter hair, maybe toddler type, make a pigtail on the top of the head that sticks straight up and put the rest of the hair into two piggies about an inch over the ears.  Poof them out by back combing, if you need to.
